DID YOU KNOW A COCKROACH'S MILK IS SUPERFOOD?
PICKS FOR YOU
A cockroach's milk offers four times more nutrients than a cow's milk.
The calorie content is three times more than that in buffalo milk, which is itself richer than cow’s milk.
It is the most nutritional substance, per weight, ever discovered, qualifying to be called a superfood. It is a complete food containing sugars, proteins, and fats.
However, it doesn't look like cow's milk at all, and not all cockroaches produced it.
It is only produced by the Pacific Beetle cockroach, belonging to a species called Diploptera punctata.
You can only milk the female Diploptera punctuate cockroaches found in the Pacific area. Do not mess around with others.
The Pacific Beetle cockroach is the only one that gives birth to live young and feeds them on a type of ‘milk' containing protein crystals.
The embryos reach about 45% gestation when the Pacific cockroach is 54 days old, and that is the best time to get the milk.
The milk is a slow release protein, discharging calories slowly when ingested, lasting throughout the process of digestion.
Milking method
Do not go off and buy a milking can and gloves. Milking cockroaches is a different matter. When you milk a cockroach, you effectively end its life. You get the milk—crystals—from its gut.
You need to open it up and harvest the nutritious, shiny crystals inside its abdomen. The crystals inside the gut is what the cockroach feeds its young, hence the name milking. Once milked, you can safely store the gems in a medium that is neither too acidic nor alkaline.
Possible applications
The cockroach milk is not suitable for western nations, where people are already ingesting more proteins per day than they need. Nevertheless, it is good news for those that struggle to find enough calories in their food due to poverty or war situations.
Researchers from the Institute of Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine in India have sequenced the genes responsible for the milk. They are now trying to replicate in much larger quantities using yeast.
