HOW DO ALLIGATORS REPRODUCE?
Female and male alligators usually reach maturity at 10-15 years and 8-12 years respectively. Some females can reach maturity when they reach 1.8 meters (6ft) in length, but most alligators are mature at 2.1 meters (approximately 7 feet).
Courting, which is initiated by males in early April, involves slapping snouts on water, bellowing above water, producing low infrared sounds along with an oily musk to attract females.
Mating usually occurs in May and June, and a month later, the female lays an average of 40 eggs in mounds made of soil, debris, and vegetation.
Young ones hatch in August and September after 63-68 days of incubation. When mating, alligators twist around each other, and the male inseminates the female.
