Based on a report by the World Health Organization, house flies, such as the Musca domestica or in warmer climates, M. sorbens may pick up microbes from contaminated waste such as feces and pass them on when they land on foodstuffs. Debilitating diseases such as dysentery, trachoma, and flies may spread typhoid when they fall on food or drink.

Trachoma affects hundreds of millions of people worldwide and is the leading cause of blindness in the world. Trachoma affects the eyes by scarring the transparent part of the eye in front of the iris, called the cornea. Flies can also transmit cholera, scarlet fever, and diphtheria.
