HOW MANY QUAIL SPECIES ARE THERE?
Quails are small ground-dwelling birds that live all over the globe except Antarctica. There are over 130 species of quails that vary in color, according to species. For example, the king quail found in Asia and the islands between Southeast Asia and the Americas comes in many colors: brown, blue, silver, maroon and almost black. However, in India, there is the black-breasted quail (Coturnix Coromandelica) found in the jungle and the brown-colored Japanese quail (Coturnix Coturnix Japonica). People breed the Japanese quail for meat.
Bobwhite quails, native to Mexico, the United States and the Caribbean, are reddish brown with a spotted-white breast and black marking on the wings of the males. The base of the bill is yellow and black in females and males respectively. The feathers have wavy strips of color, white edges, and dark bars.
