HOW MANY SPECIES OF DRAGONFLIES ARE THERE?
Currently, known species of dragonflies are 5,000 but scientists estimate that there are 5,500 to 6,500 species overall, scattered all over the world, with the exception of Antarctica.
Most species live in the tropics with fewer in temperate regions. Some dragonflies—such as the globe skimmer—migrate across oceans. Others mate with different species, creating even more varieties. Dragonflies also thrive in pools found in deserts and on mountains. They come in many colors: red, green, blue, bright greenish-yellow, metallic blue, among many.
