Fireflies eat both animals and plant products, depending on their stage in life. Adults feed on nectar or pollen, while others fast all their lives. The female lays its eggs in the ground, and the larvae feed on slugs and worms. The larvae immobilize their victims by injecting them with a numbing fluid.
