When in a colony, worker ants can live 1 to 3 years and queen ants up to 30 years. In contrast, males survive for a few weeks. While the worker ants are the smallest in the colony, they do most of the work: collecting food and caring for the young. Males live like kings during their brief existence—they don't work and die shortly after mating with young queens.
