HOW IS A JUMPING SPIDER ABLE TO PERFORM PRECISE JUMPS?
The jumping spider catches prey with ease by making precise jumps. National Graphic reported that its two principal eyes have a unique retina that is like a staircase with multiple layers: one layer produces images that are out-of-focus and the other in sharp focus.
The more blurred the image appears in the layer, the closer it is to the spider’s eye. The spider uses the appearance of the image to calculate the exact distance it has to jump to seize its victim. The ability to judge distances can be used to improve 3D cameras and make robots that can tell distances from objects.
