HOW IS A JUMPING SPIDER ABLE TO PERFORM PRECISE JUMPS?

The jumping spider catches prey with ease by making precise jumps. National Graphic reported that its two principal eyes have a unique retina that is like a staircase with multiple layers: one layer produces images that are out-of-focus and the other in sharp focus.

The more blurred the image appears in the layer, the closer it is to the spider’s eye. The spider uses the appearance of the image to calculate the exact distance it has to jump to seize its victim. The ability to judge distances can be used to improve 3D cameras and make robots that can tell distances from objects.

Wrens are songbirds found in Australia, which are able to learn the language of other neighbors. Researchers taught the birds to recognize two previously unknown sounds to them as distress calls by playing them in conjunction with the wrens' alarm call, which the wrens associated with danger. After three days, the birds run for cover when they heard the strange sound they learned.

The springtails feed on fungus, which in turn decomposes melting land matter to form form carbon dioxide and methane. The two gases are responsible to global warming, which means that the more wolf spiders feed on alternative food sources the better for global warming.
