From spring to fall, monarchs breed throughout Canada and the U.S., producing several generations every year. Monarchs migrate between the northern and Mexico breeding grounds, and it takes several generations to complete the cycle. Several factors impact on the life of monarchs, but the most significant is milkweed and humans.
Milkweed
Monarch butterflies lay their eggs on milkweed plants. When eggs hatch, the caterpillars feed and pupate on the host plants. Milkweed is poisonous and passes on toxicity to monarch caterpillars and butterflies when the larva feeds on the plant. Thus milkweed protects the monarchs in addition to supplying them.
Milkweed plays a significant role in the pollination of plants. The plant is a source of high-quality nectar to hummingbirds, bees, wasps, flies, beetles, and butterflies. Many insects are attracted to milkweed because of its nectar within reach even for insects with short tongues. It is the only host for monarch butterfly larva and is beneficial also to humans.
The milkweed plant was a useful source of rope, string, and clothing for Native Americans; and its medicinal properties are well known. It was used by natives to treat warts, bee stings, and ringworm. Mariners during World War II used life jackets filled with milkweed floss.
Humans are now growing milkweed on a commercial scale for its string. Milkweed takes about three years from planting to maturity. Farmers are marketing milkweed pods in Quebec for clothing insulation and other uses.

Besides being beautiful and relaxing to observe, and playing an essential role in the food chain, monarch butterflies teach us useful lessons. The migratory journey from Canada to Mexico, which is completed on time teach us not to procrastinate and to finish what we start. However, some ignore the benefits and are unconcerned about preserving the monarch butterfly.
Humans are the biggest threat to monarch butterflies. As human activities exert pressure on land in many areas across the U.S., Mexico, and Canada, monarchs are losing their milkweed habitats on which they depend to breed and thrive.
The indiscriminate employment of herbicides and pesticides to kill mosquitoes and pests that are a threat to human health and crops such as soybeans and corn worsens the situation. Researchers sound warnings that the monarch's wintering grounds may become unbefitting during the next 40 years.
According to an article published in The Royal Society Publishing on September 20, 2017, migratory monarchs traveling to Mexico from eastern Canada declined 84 percent during the seven years to 2014.
Based on the above, the monarch butterfly, milkweed, and the human triangle is beneficial and should be guarded jealously and preserved.
