The painted lady butterfly lives on every continent except South America. It lives in open areas that are full of grasses and flowers.
It is especially attracted to areas with plenty of thistles—which are its main nectar source and food plant for caterpillars. The butterfly is also called "Thistle" butterfly because it caterpillar food preference.
