In the summer of 1851, Lorenzo Lorraine Langstroth, an American apiarist, observed that when bees build wax combs, they leave a space of about 6 millimeters (1/4 of an inch) between them. Based on that observation, he requested his fellow beekeeper and cabinet maker, Henry Bourquin to make the first movable hives—called Langstroth hives—that made it possible to harvest honey without destroying the colony.
