One surprising fact about butterflies is that they live in almost all regions around the world, including the cold areas. An example is the ivallda arctic that lives in the summits of the California Sierra Nevadas that can endure cold winters lasting up to 10 months at elevations up to 4,300 meters (14,000 ft). Researchers believe that caterpillars produce chemicals that prevent them from freezing.
